Multi-Isotopic Investigation of Population Dynamics and Mobility among Rural Medieval Christian Communities at Ghazali, Northern Sudan

Abstract The archaeological site of Ghazali (northern Sudan) provides a rare opportunity to investigate the dynamics mixed economies and mobility on fringes Nile valley at time Christian expansion in Nubia. Thanks its particular hydrological conditions, Sudan has long history diverse groups pursuing different economic activities, with agricultural communities settled along fertile various mobile pastoralists occupying vast areas adjacent deserts. represents an early medieval Nubian rural extensive funerary zone. Sr/ 86 values very heterogeneous, suggesting that community, as whole, benefited variety water sources, perhaps including significant contributions groundwater wells. We suggest this adds further support reconstruction practice agriculture animal herding neighbouring desert. These data add growing evidence flexible eastern Africa provided food security even under most challenging conditions.
